Development of microbial technology based on mangrove associated actinomycetes to manage pathogenic Aeromonads in aquaculture.
The wide and frequent use of antibiotics in aquaculture, which are traditionally the most important line of therapeutics against bacterial disease, has resulted in the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. The emergence of multi drug resistant (MDR) fish pathogens has significantly reduced options for treating fish diseases, which is a growing threat and a hindrance for the successful management of aquaculture farms. The Aeromonas infections and their antimicrobial resistance are widespread in aquaculture systems, therefore, it is prudent to develop natural antagonistic compound and alternative strategy to control the AMR pathogens in aquaculture. The proposed study aims at the development of a microbial technology based on mangrove actinomycetes to control Aeromonas infections in aquaculture. The mangrove actinomycetes and their secondary metabolites are of great biomedical importance. Of all the microorganisms, actinomycetes have attracted great attention since they have developed unique metabolic and physiological capabilities that not only ensure survival in extreme habitats, but also offer the potential to produce compounds with various bioactivities and other interesting pharmacological activities. The present investigations will be directed toward the discovery of structurally unique antimicrobial compounds against aquatic pathogens from mangrove associated actinomycetes through an integrated genomic and metabolomics approach targeting compounds with novel chemical scaffolds which ultimately benefit animal and human health.
